Vassar College Student Death – Avery Kim, a student of Vassar College passed away on Sunday, April 7, by suicide. Lathrop House was his home, and he was a member of the Class of 2026.
The Vassar Fencing Team included Avery as a member of the team. Economics was his area of concentration. The school has been given the assurance by the police that there is no danger to the safety of the campus.
The members of his family, as well as all of his friends and loved ones, are in our thoughts at this time. We are all taken aback by this, as stated in the statement that was issued by the school; the way that people react to information of this nature varies from person to person.
It is of the utmost importance that our community be committed to being there for one another during this time. As President, Elizabeth H. Bradley, I would want to encourage everyone to spend some time in the following days talking to one another and sharing space with one another in whatever manner appears to be most reassuring.
For the members of our community who are going through this challenging time, there are a lot of tools that are available to support them. For support, students can reach the Counselor on call at (845) 437-7333, who is available around the clock. Contacting the office of the Dean of Studies is an option for students who require academic assistance.
By dialing 1-(800) 624-5544, members of the faculty, staff, and administration can get in touch with the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) to receive support at this difficult time. Calling 1-(866) 703-1259 allows employees to schedule free and unlimited phone or video counseling sessions with TelaDoc/HealthiestYou.
These sessions can be scheduled by employees. In addition, Dutchess County Behavioral Health is aware of the requirements of Vassar and provides mental health support services that are confidential and available around the clock.
Counselors from Metcalf and staff members from Religious and Spiritual Life and Contemplative Practices will be present in the Jade Parlor today from three to five o’clock in the afternoon for those individuals who wish to be in the company of those who are going through the grief process. Additional gatherings for support are going to take place, and we will follow up with you once we have more information.
In the wake of this tragic incident, we extend our deepest condolences to the families affected by this heart-wrenching loss. As they grapple with the indescribable pain of bidding farewell to their loved ones, we share in their sorrow and stand in solidarity during this time of profound grief.
