Sheila Panke Onalaska WI Obituary – Authorities have officially identified the victim of a tragic residential fire in Onalaska as 78-year-old Sheila Panke.
The fire, which broke out on the afternoon of January 26, 2025, claimed the life of Panke and caused significant damage to the structure where she lived.
According to the Onalaska Fire Department, emergency responders were dispatched at approximately 3:30 p.m. to a residence located at 2428 Franklin Street following reports of a fire.
Upon arrival, firefighters were met with heavy smoke and flames engulfing the home. Crews immediately launched an aggressive fire suppression effort while simultaneously conducting a search-and-rescue operation inside the residence.
During the search, firefighters discovered a victim inside the structure. The individual, later identified as Panke, was quickly removed from the burning home and given emergency medical attention on the scene.
Tragically, efforts to revive her were unsuccessful, and she was pronounced dead. The fire was brought under control and declared fully extinguished at 4:11 p.m., but not before the home sustained extensive damage.
Neighbors and community members expressed their sorrow upon learning of the fatal fire. Several residents in the area described Sheila Panke as a kind and friendly neighbor who had lived in the community for many years. “She was always out in her garden during the summer, tending to her flowers,” said one neighbor. “It’s heartbreaking to hear that she didn’t make it out.”
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and officials have not yet determined whether foul play, an electrical issue, or another factor contributed to the blaze. Fire investigators, along with local law enforcement and other agencies, are working diligently to piece together what led to the tragic incident.
The Onalaska Fire Department issued a statement extending their condolences to the family and loved ones of Sheila Panke. “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time,” the department stated. “We are committed to determining the cause of this fire and ensuring the safety of our community.”
