Segus Jolivette Lafayette LA Death – A Lafayette police officer has died from injuries sustained during a hostage situation in Jeanerette on Thursday.
The officer, a member of the department’s SWAT team, was one of four people injured while assisting local law enforcement. Two officers were shot, including the one who later died, while the other two sustained injuries from bullet fragments.
The Lafayette Police Department has confirmed the officer’s death and identified him as Officer Segus Jolivette. This marks the first line-of-duty death for the Lafayette Police Department since the tragic loss of Corporal Michael Middlebrook in October 2017.
Authorities have confirmed that a suspect is in custody and no longer poses a threat to the public. Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office has released the mugshot of the suspect in today’s multiple officer involved shooting, 31-year-old Nyjal Hurst.
A 2014 Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office report implicated him in an attempted murder charge stemming from a drive-by shooting.
More recently, in July 2023, Hurst was arrested in Lafayette Parish on a slew of felony drug and weapons charges. These charges included possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, cocaine, and a firearm with an obliterated serial number.
Additionally, he faced charges of illegal weapon possession in the presence of narcotics, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and resisting arrest.
A standoff unfolded on Thursday morning in the 2500 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard in Jeanerette, prompting a response from the Lafayette Police SWAT team and other law enforcement agencies.
The incident began when the Jeanerette Marshal’s Office attempted to serve a warrant at the residence. The suspect retreated into the home and subsequently took two individuals hostage.
