Scottsdale Hospital Shooting – A man is in custody after a shooting rocked the HonorHealth Scottsdale Shea Medical Center in Scottsdale, Arizona, on Sunday afternoon, March 2, 2025, leaving one person injured.
The incident unfolded just after 1 p.m. in the hospital’s emergency room near Loop 101 and Shea Boulevard, when a security guard was shot in the upper body during a confrontation.
Police say the guard’s injuries, while serious, are not life-threatening, and he’s expected to pull through after being rushed into care right there in the facility he worked to protect. “It happened so fast,” a shaken staff member recalled, still processing the burst of violence in a place meant for healing.
The suspect, described as a reluctant patient brought to the ER by a family member, was quickly subdued and taken into custody by Scottsdale police. Officers arrived to find him already pinned down by other security guards and hospital workers, a handgun lying nearby—a stark sign of how close things came to spiraling further.
“He was arguing with staff, and then it just escalated,” one witness said, painting a picture of a tense exchange that exploded into gunfire. Authorities are calling it an isolated incident, stressing there’s no ongoing threat to the public, though the hospital’s usually calm halls buzzed with unease as the scene stabilized.
Scottsdale Police released the following statement:
Scottsdale PD detectives are investigating after a man was shot in the upper body while inside the ER at Honor Health Shea a little after 1 PM today. There is currently no information that supports this was an active shooter situation. The suspect was originally brought in by a family member as a potential patient at the hospital.
While inside the ER, there was an altercation with the suspect and security which escalated into the suspect shooting a security guard in the upper body. That gunshot victim was ultimately transported to a trauma center for additional care. His current condition is not known.
Hospital security and staff helped subdue the suspect and disarm him as police were responding. A handgun was recovered at the scene and was turned over to police. The suspect was placed under arrest by responding officers. There is no ongoing threat to the surrounding community. The only other reported injury was a minor hand/ wrist injury to a second security guard.
This remains an active investigation. Our detectives have a lot of work ahead as they conduct interviews and collect evidence to peace together what led up to this shooting.
The hospital is safe, still open and accepting patients and walk-ins to the emergency room. There is only a small area that is affected by the ongoing investigation.
