Richard “Itchy” Jones, a legendary figure in Southern Illinois University (SIU) athletics and a member of the Saluki Hall of Fame, has passed away at the age of 87.
A native of Herrin, Illinois, Jones left an indelible mark on the world of college baseball as both a player and a coach.
He played for SIU from 1957 to 1960 and later returned to manage the team from 1970 to 1990, leading the Salukis to numerous victories and cementing his legacy as one of the program’s most influential figures.
Jones’ impact extended beyond SIU when he became the head coach at the University of Illinois, where he continued to shape the lives of countless athletes until his retirement in 2005.
His dedication to the sport and his players earned him widespread respect and admiration. In 2014, SIU honored his contributions by naming its baseball stadium after him, a testament to his enduring legacy.
Throughout his career, Jones was known not only for his coaching prowess but also for his ability to inspire and mentor young athletes. His passion for the game and his commitment to excellence left a lasting impression on everyone he worked with.
“Itchy was more than a coach—he was a mentor, a leader, and a friend,” said a former player. “He taught us about baseball, but more importantly, he taught us about life.”
The University Archives at SIU holds a treasure trove of memories from Jones’ storied career, including a series of photos taken by Steve Buhman during fall practice in October 1986. These images, scanned from 35mm negatives, capture Jones in his element, coaching with the same intensity and dedication that defined his career.
As news of his passing spreads, tributes from former players, colleagues, and fans have poured in, celebrating the life of a man who gave so much to the sport he loved. “Itchy Jones was a giant in college baseball,” said a longtime colleague. “His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the players he inspired.”
Richard “Itchy” Jones’ death marks the end of an era, but his influence on SIU, the University of Illinois, and the broader baseball community will never be forgotten. His memory will continue to inspire future generations of athletes and coaches, ensuring that his legacy endures for years to come.
