Mike Daignault Waterford CT Obituary, Well-known 70s New London-Waterford Speedbowl Legend has died
Mike Daignault Death | Waterford, CT – The New London-Waterford Speedbowl, “Big Mike” Daignault has passed away. At the beginning of the 1970s, Mike was a member of the fendered division, which was known as “Daredevils” at the beginning of the decade and “Grand Americans” at the conclusion of the decade. Other members of this division were Bill Sweet, Bob Gada, Ron Cote, Mysterious Wayne Smith, and Donny Fowler.
Mike Daignault was a member of the Ford team that won a significant number of races during that time period. He was also a member of the Gadas. During the 1971 season, Mike won a record-tying ten races while driving Earl Passmore’s “Spirit of 76.”
However, he was ultimately defeated by fellow Ford wheelman Bob Gada, who won the championship. When Mike won seven races in 1973, he would eventually be awarded the title. From 1969 to 1976, he was victorious in 26 races in that class.
During the 1970s, Mike was also a regular recipient of the Most Popular Driver Awards, which were given out at the beginning. His subsequent return to the Speedbowl in the early 1990s was a memorable one, as he went on to win three more races at the coastal oval in the years 1991 and 1992.
On the #SidsViewPodcast, we devote a significant amount of time to discussing the most attractive automobiles across all categories. Without a shadow of a doubt, Mike Daignault is also renowned for the strikingly gorgeous “Spirit of 76” automobiles that he designed.
We got the opportunity to conduct an interview with him for the #SpeedbowlDocSeries around ten years ago. Primarily, his interview is covered in Part 2 (1961-1974) of the documentary. In my memory, I was a little bit awestruck when I was asked to interview him. During the course of my study into potential candidates for that project, I came across a few rivals who consistently showed up. He was one of those competitors. I consider it a blessing that we were able to record him telling his story for our cameras.
As we come together in remembrance, let us cherish the moments we shared with those who are no longer with us. Their legacy will forever be etched in our hearts, and their impact on our lives will serve as a lasting tribute to the love and joy they brought into the world.
Feel free to leave a message of condolences and prayers for the family and friends of the deceased in the comments section as it will go a long way for them during this difficult time.
