Upper East Side Murder Suicide – On Friday on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, a woman was shot dead by her child’s grandmother, who then turned the pistol on her own body.
It happened on East 88th Street between York and East End Avenue, right down the block from Gracie Mansion’s entrance, soon before nine in the morning. As the gunfire began, people enjoying the day—many of them pushing strollers for infants—ran for shelter.
Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny of the New York Police Department stated that the sad murder-suicide was caused by a custody dispute. The grandma of Marissa Galloway’s 4-year-old kid approached the 45-year-old mother as she was loading her 1-year-old child into the car and closing the trunk.
That’s when, according to the police, 65-year-old Cathleen Lee pulled out a 9mm Glock and shot Galloway twice—once in the back and once in the head while she was lying in the roadway in the back of the car.
Then, on the sidewalk, Chicago resident Lee shot herself in the head. At the scene, she was pronounced deceased. After being taken to the hospital, Galloway passed away.
Galloway had been involved in a custody battle with her 4-year-old son’s father. According to Kenny, one gun was discovered inside Lee’s tote bag, while the other 9mm gun was discovered on the pavement next to her.
In addition to two additional documented incidences, the NYPD possessed records of at least five reports of domestic disputes within the family. There were no wounds to the infant in the car seat. The murder-suicide is still being investigated.
