Maggie Steffens Birth and Education
Margaret Ann Steffens, born on June 4, 1993, has established herself as one of the most accomplished water polo players in the history of the sport.
She is a three-time Olympic gold medalist, securing victories with the United States national team at the 2012, 2016, and 2020 Summer Olympics. Her remarkable performance at the 2020 Olympics set a new Olympic record for the most goals scored by an individual player in women’s water polo.
Steffens’ journey in water polo began at Monte Vista High School, where she was instrumental in leading her team to league championships in 2007, 2008, and 2009. Her prowess in the pool extended beyond high school as she played for Diablo Water Polo in Alamo, California, further honing her skills and preparing for a stellar collegiate career.
Maggie Steffens Career
Steffens attended Stanford University, where she played on the women’s water polo team from 2013 to 2017. Her tenure at Stanford was marked by exceptional success. She led the team to NCAA championships in 2014, 2015, and 2017, and to second-place finishes in 2013 and 2016.
One of her standout moments came in the 2015 NCAA semifinal game against USC, where she scored four goals, leading Stanford to a narrow 9-8 victory. In 2017, Steffens once again showcased her clutch performance by scoring three goals in the 8-7 championship victory against UCLA, including the game-winning goal with just nine seconds left. Her outstanding contributions earned her the MVP title of the NCAA tournament in both 2015 and 2017. Steffens graduated from Stanford in June 2017 with a B.S. degree in Science, Technology, and Society.
Steffens’ first international appearance was at the 2009 FINA Junior Women’s World Championships in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, where her team finished in third place. She made her senior debut at the age of 16 at the 10th Holiday Cup in Newport Beach, California, from December 9 to 13, 2009, where she scored twice.
