Crash closes SH60 between Motueka and Richmond
This afternoon, a deadly collision between a car and a motorcycle occurred at Māpua, resulting in the closure of a portion of the key highway that connects Motueka and Richmond.

The closure will last for many hours. The collision took place at approximately 2.30 p.m. This evening, the police confirmed that a person had passed away. The closure of State Highway 60 at the interchange with Māpua Drive is still in effect as the police continue their investigation into the crime.

Waka Kotahi, director of the New Zealand Transport Agency, stated that the route will continue to be closed until the police did out their duties, which was expected to take many hours.

With the implementation of the detours, Pea Viner Corner is now accessible via the Moutere Highway, and Gardner Valley Road is the route that leads back to State Highway 60. We strongly recommend that motorists stay away from the area and prepare for delays.

During the course of today, there have been two accidents that have taken place on the same stretch of highway. At approximately 10 o’clock in the morning, the police reported that a collision involving two vehicles had partially blocked the southbound lane of State Highway 60 at Māpua Drive.

According to Hato Hone St. John, three victims were evaluated at the site, and one of them was evacuated to Nelson Hospital in a condition that was considered to be moderate.

In the wake of this tragic incident, we extend our deepest condolences to the families affected by this heart-wrenching loss. As they grapple with the indescribable pain of bidding farewell to their loved ones, we share in their sorrow and stand in solidarity during this time of profound grief.
