John Dant Death Louisville KY, Owner of The Back Door has died

John Dant Death – The Back Door is shutting down after the death of its owner, John Dant who passed away on October 19th, 2023 after a sudden short illness. On the first day of the year 1961, John was born in Louisville, Kentucky.

He was the first male to be born in that year. The ninth child of John “Jack” Dant Jr. and Faye Gross Dant, John was the ninth kid overall. John was the only male in his family, and there were eight girls who came before him. His friends and family celebrated him greatly.

John Dant Education
St. Agnes Catholic School was John’s primary educational institution of choice. The fact that he moved about with his family allowed him to complete his formal education in a number of different high schools, including St. Xavier, Pikeville High School, and Atherton High School, among others.

In spite of the fact that John never attended college, he was a huge supporter of the athletics team at the University of Kentucky, much to the dismay of his wife. Beginning his career as a bag boy at a neighborhood grocery store, John had an outstanding work ethic.

At the tender age of 26, he acquired a local pub known as The Back Door, which is situated in the Louisville Highlands neighborhood at the same time as the well-known Mid City Mall. Prior to that, he had worked in a variety of retail and management positions.

Over the course of the subsequent 36 years, John transformed The Back Door from a neighborhood pub into a well-known full-service bar restaurant that is famous for its wings and cocktails that are considered to be “satisfying.”

John Dant Career
He was a wonderful boss, and all of his staff and customers adored him because of his kind, jovial, and generous demeanor. Among the numerous causes that John was a staunch supporter of, animal rescue and the arts were two of his favorites.

A great number of fund-raising events were sponsored by him, and he was always giving with his time and ability. Through his contributions to a variety of organizations and his collaboration with the neighborhood associations and neighbors, John was actively involved in the Highlands community. His efforts were directed toward preserving and enhancing the quality of life in the Highlands.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John “Jack” Dant, Jr. and Augusta “Faye” Dant; his niece, Amy Elizabeth Shrader; and his beloved dog, Kohl. He is survived by his wife Alice; his son, Taylor; sisters, Nancy Alford, Linda Clemons, Laura Hohnecker (Terry), Vicki Dant, Cindi Shrader (Paul), Jackie Merson (Paul), Jeanne Halloran, Susan Metts (Bobby); in-laws Todd Nickens and Kay Boone. Nieces and nephews Emily Sansbury, John Shrader, Katie Hohnecker, Kara Hohnecker, Becca Clemons, Matthew Sansbury, Paul Merson, James Merson, Hadley Boone and Adrian Boone. His dog Ryelee and family cats, Red and Jesse.
