More about Joe Egan
Joe was a sweet and gentle soul, known for his delectable musical tunes and genius way of approach. Being in Stealers Wheel, he was one of the two key members of the musical group, contributing to the group’s hit song “Stuck in the Middle with You” as a writer.
Egan was born and raised in an Irish Catholic home in the city of Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland. Joining former St Mirin’s Academy schoolmate Gerry Rafferty, he played in various smaller British bands, such as The Sensors and The Maverix, and worked as a session musician.
Stealers Wheel
In 1972, the folk/rock band, Stealers Wheel was founded by Egan and Rafferty. Their co-written song “Stuck in the Middle With You” became a hit in 1973 after two unsuccessful singles, peaking at number ten on the US Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart.
The Egan-penned song “Star” was one of the band’s later, lesser hits. However, the band’s dissolution in 1975 was ultimately caused by stagnate sales figures and creative disagreements.
In 1979, Egan recorded his solo first album, Out of Nowhere. His second album, Map, was not a commercial or critical success when it was released in 1981, and as a result, no singles were made to promote it. In the 1990s, Egan departed the music industry. His family along with his nearest and dearest were with him at the time of his death.
