James “Larry” Ambrose Obituary, Death – James Lawrence Ambrose, affectionately known as “Larry,” passed away peacefully at the Sonny Montgomery VA Hospital on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at the age of 63.
Born on May 17, 1961, in Ripley, Mississippi, Larry was the son of the late Marnell Ouida Wingo Ambrose and James Paul “Billy” Ambrose. His life was a remarkable testament to service, love, and unwavering dedication to his family and community.
Larry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and godfather. He is survived by his beloved wife, Cathy Pace Ambrose, to whom he was fiercely loyal and deeply committed. His daughter Brittney Henry, son James, and cherished grandchildren Baylie, Kaylin, Elijah, Makynlie, and Bo, will forever hold his memory close in their hearts.
Larry’s sisters, Debbie Parker, Susan Ambrose, and Mary Croft, remember him as a loving and caring brother. His godsons Anthony Santangelo, Sam Bishop, and James Cummins, also benefited from his guidance and affection, finding in Larry a father figure and trusted mentor.
Larry’s life of service began in the U.S. Air Force, where he proudly served from 1981 to 1990. His dedication to his country continued as a Federal Technician with the 173rd Air National Guard from 1990 to 1993, before he transitioned to the Air National Guard, serving from 1993 until 2002.
His years in uniform reflect his unwavering commitment to protecting and serving his nation, and his fellow airmen remember him for his leadership and camaraderie.
Beyond his military service, Larry was an active member of the Fondren community, serving as President of the Broadmeadow Neighborhood Board from 2003 to 2006. His leadership was pivotal in fostering a sense of unity and pride among his neighbors.
He was also dedicated to shaping young lives, volunteering in the aftercare program at the Privette School during this period. Education was a lifelong pursuit for Larry, and in 2006, he earned his Bachelor’s degree from Belhaven College, a personal achievement that demonstrated his commitment to learning.
In 2007, Larry turned his passion for education into a profession when he became a 5th-grade teacher at Boyd Elementary School. His students benefited from his warmth, patience, and enthusiasm for teaching. The following year, Larry shifted careers and worked as a Contract Analyst at State Aid Road Construction, where his analytical skills and attention to detail were highly valued. He retired in 2017, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism and dedication to the roles he held.
Larry’s life was marked by his selflessness, his love for his family, and his sense of responsibility to his community. He lived with kindness and humility, touching the lives of many who were fortunate to know him. His passing leaves an irreplaceable void, but his memory will continue to inspire those he loved and served.
