Fairfield Police Department – Essex County, New Jersey officer James Ciampi has sadly passed away. He died after a valiant battle with cancer on Monday 9th September 2024 surrounded by loved ones.

He was confirmed dead through a Facebook post that reads “We regret to announce the untimely passing of Fairfield Police Officer James Ciampi, #94, who passed away peacefully surrounded by his family.”

Police Officer James Ciampi, widely known as Jimmy among his peers and community, has emerged as a significant figure in Fairfield, Essex County. His journey in law enforcement, marked by unwavering commitment and remarkable achievements, reflects a deep-seated dedication to serving and protecting his community.

James Ciampi embarked on his law enforcement career with the Fairfield Police Department in October 2016. Starting as a Class 2 officer, Ciampi quickly demonstrated his capability and dedication, leading to his appointment as a full-time officer just a year later. His career trajectory has been nothing short of exemplary, marked by an array of accolades and responsibilities that underscore his exceptional service.

In 2022, Officer Ciampi’s expertise and dedication were recognized when he was assigned to the Essex County Auto Theft Task Force. This role allowed him to focus on combating auto theft, a critical issue affecting the community. Beyond his work in auto theft, Ciampi has been a vital contributor to various community initiatives.

His roles as a physical fitness instructor and his involvement with the junior police academy and Special Olympics Snow Bowl flag football team highlight his commitment to fostering community engagement and promoting physical well-being.

Officer Ciampi’s contributions have not gone unnoticed. Over his relatively short career, he has amassed a series of distinguished awards. These include four lifesaving citations, which attest to his courage and quick thinking in critical situations, and three unit citations, recognizing his exemplary teamwork and performance. In 2018, Officer Ciampi was honored by Mothers Against Drunken Driving, a testament to his efforts in combatting impaired driving and ensuring road safety. His bravery was further highlighted in April 2020 when, during a high-stakes situation involving a suspect armed with a loaded weapon, he was one of three officers who successfully apprehended the individual following a dangerous pursuit.

The recognition of Officer Ciampi’s valor extends beyond his immediate community. He has been honored with valor awards from prestigious organizations such as the 200 Club of Essex County, the New Jersey State PBA, and the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police.
