Jamael Carter Fayetteville NC Death:- Jamael Carter Jr. ‘24, a four-year member of the Averett University Men’s Basketball team and leader on campus has passed away.
He was announced dead today, Thursday, the 25th of July 2024. Former Averett University basketball player Jamael Carter Jr also known to many as ‘Melo’ died from injuries sustained in an accident. No further information has been released.

A fantastic athlete who went on to play college Ball for Averett University and recently graduated. We are in prayer for his family, team mates, and friends during this time. About Jamael Carter
The 2023-24 season was a promising one for Jamael , marked by determination and unfortunate setbacks. Playing in four games and making three starts, he showcased his skills early on. Notably, he scored a season-high nine points against Greensboro.
However, his season was abruptly cut short due to a season-ending injury. Despite this setback, his contributions and dedication were recognized when he received the athletic operations service award at Averett’s Night of Champions. His academic excellence was also acknowledged as he earned a spot on the ODAC All-Academic Team.
In the 2022-23 season, Jamael demonstrated his growth and versatility as a junior. He played in 19 games, averaging 3.0 points and 1.2 rebounds per game. A highlight of his season was scoring a career-high 17 points against Southern Virginia on November 19. This season marked his increasing confidence and ability to contribute significantly to the team’s efforts.
During his sophomore year in the 2021-22 season, Jamael appeared in 11 games, averaging 1.8 points per game. Although his playing time was limited, he made the most of his opportunities on the court, showing flashes of his potential and readiness to step up when called upon.
As a freshman in the 2020-21 season, Jamael began to make his mark. He played in four games, averaging 2.0 points per game. One of the standout moments of his freshman year was scoring a season-high eight points against William Peace on February 14. This early experience laid the foundation for his future development and contributions to the team.
Jamael was the son of Jamael and Lateisha Carter. He was majoring in sports administration, a field that aligns with his passion for athletics and his aspirations for a future career in sports. His journey through college basketball has been one of resilience, hard work, and continuous improvement, both on and off the court.
As he continues to recover and prepare for the challenges ahead, Jamael remains a dedicated and inspiring figure for his teammates and the broader Averett University community. His achievements thus far reflect his commitment to excellence in both his academic and athletic endeavors.
