Ion Daghi Death: Father of 3 stabbed to death in Sallins, Co Kildare; 23-year-old man charged

Ion Daghi Death – A father of three has been brutally stabbed to death at his home in Co Kildare on Sunday. Ion Daghi (39) who is originally from Moldova was stabbed by his brother-in-law during dispute in a family gathering.

Daghi worked as a roofer in the Kildare area for several years and has been a great worker since then. He had a young family. He was a quiet fella but the type of fella who would get the job done.

Valeriu Melnic, aged 23, from Calliaghstown Lower, Rathcoole, Co Dublin, was brought before Naas District Court on Monday in relation to the death of Ion Daghi, aged 39, at The Close, Sallins Park.

According to Detective Garda Enda Coleman, Mr. Melnic, who works as a stone mason, chose not to speak or respond despite being formally warned and accused. He stated that it will be claimed that the deadly incident occurred during a family gathering attended by five adults and three youngsters.

It is said that certain others in attendance retired to bed, and a disagreement ensued between the defendant and the deceased, who had consumed whisky. The court was informed that the argument subsided but then flared up again at approximately 3am.

According to Det Garda Coleman, it will be claimed that the accused individual proceeded to the kitchen and acquired a knife. According to Mr. Daghi, he proceeded to the kitchen where a confrontation occurred, resulting in him being stabbed in the chest with a 30cm-long knife.

According to the court, the emergency services were contacted by the deceased’s 12-year-old daughter. The defendant was provided with pro bono legal assistance, which was subsequently expanded to include the services of a Russian interpreter.

An interpreter translated the proceedings for the defendant on Monday night. Mr. Melnic was detained in custody and will make another court appearance on Thursday via video-link. Upon the request of a defence solicitor, the judge additionally mandated a psychological evaluation.
