Since a young age, Anthony Coletta, MD, MBA, had a clear aspiration to pursue a career in medicine. He would accompany his father to the hospital, where the older Coletta worked as a pathologist.
Following completion of their undergraduate studies at Georgetown University and their medical school and residency at Thomas Jefferson Medical College, Dr. Coletta became a member of the medical staff at Bryn Mawr Hospital.
Dr. Coletta is recognized as a trailblazer in the advancement of laparoscopic surgery, a less invasive surgical technique. His contributions have significantly influenced the progress of healthcare in the Philadelphia region.
In 1990, he conducted the inaugural laparoscopic appendectomy in the Philadelphia area, as well as the first laparoscopic colon resection in the same year. In 2009, Philadelphia Magazine recognized him as one of the top doctors in the region.
Upon seeing that his occupation as a surgeon did not define his full sense of self, Dr. Coletta decided to transition after spending 25 years in the operating room. “I made the decision to pursue an MBA in my early 50s,” he states.
Dr. Coletta completed the Fox School Executive MBA program and subsequently assumed the position of chief medical officer and executive vice president at Holy Redeemer, marking his first non-medical post.
In 2013, he became a member of Independence Blue Cross and took charge of establishing Tandigm Health, which is now a fully owned subsidiary of Independence. He currently holds the position of President and CEO at Tandigm Health.
“I intentionally selected the Fox School due to the excellence of the faculty, the curriculum, the second-year international trip, and the manageable cost, as I was personally covering the expenses,” states Dr. Coletta. “Through my experience at Fox and my current position in the boardroom, I have gained a profound understanding of the significance of teams.
It has become evident that we possess significantly greater strength when we work together.” Throughout the years, Dr. Coletta has witnessed the transformation of the healthcare industry.
Dr. Coletta envisions a future where healthcare is provided with optimal timing, by qualified physicians, and at an appropriate cost. He aims to streamline the management of care, which he describes as a significant, challenging, and ambitious objective.
At Independence, we are not aiming for minor, gradual objectives; we must exert maximum effort to ensure the success of the business venture.” When Dr. Coletta is not solving healthcare problems, he has been very giving with both his time and money.
The Coletta Family Scholarship Fund has been established by his family at Fox, a business school that he describes as having a profound impact. “Among all my educational experiences, which include Georgetown and Jefferson, Fox was the most intellectually stimulating and profound,” he states. “I feel a strong sense of gratitude towards Temple University for its role in propelling my career to the next level.”
Dr. Anthony Coletta has been recognized by the Philadelphia Business Journal as one of the ten individuals who are actively “transforming healthcare” in Philadelphia.
Dr. Coletta, a member of Tandigm, has been acknowledged for his significant contribution in revolutionizing the healthcare environment of the region and enhancing the well-being of individuals in this locality and beyond. Access to the complete article is available.
Throughout his clinical career, he spearheaded the establishment of Renaissance Health Alliance in 2000. This was a collaborative effort between Independence and Renaissance, a prominent independent practice group of doctors in the Philadelphia area, where he held the positions of chairman and CEO.
Significance: Coletta, as the leader of Tandigm Health, is responsible for spearheading an initiative supported by the major health insurance provider in the region.
The goal of this initiative is to prioritize primary care doctors in healthcare delivery and equip them with the necessary tools and data to enhance the quality of treatment they provide.
Currently, over 350 doctors have enrolled with Tandigm, a company that reached its initial agreement with Holy Redeemer, a health system, in February. The business strategy of the joint venture involves IBC allocating an undisclosed portion of its health insurance premiums to Tandigm.
Tandigm will then be responsible for supervising the medical care delivered to IBC patients by doctors in Tandigm’s physician network.
Coletta’s objective is to provide a new approach where doctors are remunerated primarily based on their ability to maintain the health of patients and prevent hospitalization, rather than being paid for each individual treatment or surgery they provide.
