Dick Summer Death – Dick Summer, an “iconic DJ” who had an overnight radio show on WBZ-AM, has passed away. He was respected in the radio industry. He was 89 years old. Summer, who was known for his “Nightlight” show as well as many other things, passed away on Tuesday, according to an announcement made by WBZ NewsRadio.
An announcement was made by the radio station, which stated, “We have some sad news to report from the WBZ NewsRadio newsroom.” A legendary DJ named Dick Summer, who was responsible for spinning the tunes overnight on WBZ-AM in the 1960s and 1970s, has passed away.
Summer worked at various stations before joining the Hub, including in Indianapolis, where he heard a former colleague on WBZ’s broadcast from Boston one night.
That led Summer to apply to WBZ, according to his Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame bio.“So Dick sent an audition tape to the WBZ Program Director, Al Heacock who promptly ignored it,” Summer’s bio says. “Again, Dick delivered a recording with the same outcome. It took over a year for Dick to get the job.
His bio states, “Of course out of concern for blowing their highly prestigious reputation, WBZ hid Dick away as best they could on the all-night show.” But Dick didn’t care. Loved it. He was having fun.”Summer’s overnight presentation featured poetry recitations.
WBZ NewsRadio said that listeners called in to give him the ‘password’ of ‘one hen, two ducks, and three squawking geese,’ on his overnight show, ‘Nightlight,’ which was noted for its humour.
