Diane Deans Death – Diane Deans, a former member of the Ottawa city council, passed away on Tuesday, as confirmed by Coun. Jessica Bradley’s statement. Deans, who served as the representative for the Gloucester-Southgate district for nearly three decades, passed away quietly at her residence with her family by her side.
In the beginning of this month, she began receiving palliative care following a prolonged five-year struggle with ovarian cancer.
In a statement, Bradley expressed that despite Diane’s illness, she maintained a vibrant existence characterized by her determined attitude, resolute determination, bravery, and empathy.
Deans was initially elected to the previous Southgate seat in 1994 and subsequently served as the representative for the merged Gloucester-Southgate electorate until 2022.
Megan Deans said. “Hundreds of people told us how much my mother affected their lives. “My mother was my role model, but also a role model for many other girls and women, showing that no dream is out of reach,”
In her 28 years in municipal politics, she chaired various major boards and committees, including the Ottawa Police Services Board’s first female chair. After the 2022 Freedom Convoy protests and Deans’ decision to recruit a new police head, Councillors dismissed her from her job.
She announced she would run for mayor but eventually withdrew. After being diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2019, Deans took a year off before returning to board chair.
Bradley said she will ask the council to rename the Greenboro Community Centre in her honour. She is survived by her husband Ron Richards, daughter Megan, and grandson Evan.
A celebration of life will be held on May 25 at 2 p.m. at the Infinity Convention Center, followed by a reception. The ceremony is open to anyone who wants to participate and celebrate her life.
Books of condolence will be on display at Ottawa City Hall and the Greenboro Community Center on May 21, 22 and 23 for those who would like to share their thoughts. People are also asked to send condolences via email to diane.deans01@gmail.com.
