An exit ramp on I-85 in Opelika was briefly closed due to a fatal late-night automobile crash. The Opelika Police Department reports that at around 7:17 p.m. on Saturday, September 7, multiple vehicles collided on I-85 near the Exit 62 Northbound exit ramp.
This information was received by Opelika dispatch. Officers discovered two cars—a Tesla and a Toyota 4Runner—that looked to have collided head-on when they arrived.
The responding officer put out the fire in the Tesla, allowing the occupants to be helped until Opelika Fire got on the scene. The 4Runner’s driver and the Tesla’s passenger were taken to Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital in Columbus by ambulance, while the Tesla’s driver was flown there via Life Flight. Officials report that Dr. Malcolm Goodchild, MD, of Fortson, Georgia, age 50, who was driving the Tesla, passed away at the hospital due to his injuries.
According to officials, the driver of the 4Runner is still hospitalized at this time with critical injuries, while the passenger in the Tesla is still there with non-life-threatening injuries. Following the inquiry, authorities stated that it seemed the 4Runner’s driver was driving the wrong way on the exit ramp when they collided with the Tesla head-on.
