David Vanderhamm Obituary – A 40-year-old man has been identified as the individual who died following an altercation with police last Saturday.
Cedar Rapids Police were called to the scene in the 200 block of 31st Street NE on April 6th after receiving a 911 call.
Subsequently, they received a second 911 call requesting officers to conduct a welfare check on the initial caller, who was reported to be armed and making statements indicating suicidal and homicidal intentions.
Responders implemented a high-risk approach when dealing with the initial caller, who was armed.
Upon receiving verbal commands from officers to drop his weapon, the individual, now a suspect, raised his weapon.
Subsequently, three officers discharged their firearms at the suspect, causing him to fall to the ground after being struck.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene, where the suspect was pronounced dead. The second caller also sustained gunshot wounds and was transported to the hospital for treatment.
Fortunately, no police officers sustained injuries during the incident.
Authorities have confirmed the identity of the deceased individual as David Vanderhamm of Cedar Rapids.
They have stated that they will not disclose the identity of the second caller at this moment.
The Cedar Rapids Police Department officers involved in the incident will continue to be on critical incident leave until the investigation concludes.
In the wake of this tragic incident, we extend our deepest condolences to the families affected by this heart-wrenching loss. As they grapple with the indescribable pain of bidding farewell to their loved ones, we share in their sorrow and stand in solidarity during this time of profound grief.
