Craig Marcus Watkins, a prominent American lawyer known for his tenure as the district attorney for Dallas County, Texas, passed away on December 12, 2023. His death at the age of 56, occurring at his residence on Tuesday morning, was confirmed by former team member Russell Wilson, prompting reflections on his impactful career.

When Watkins was elected in 2006 as Texas’s first African American district attorney, he etched his name in history, serving from 2007 to 2015. Russell Wilson conveyed the somber news stating, “It is with deep sorrow that the friends and family of Craig Marcus Watkins announce his passing.”

While the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office affirmed Watkins’s demise, the cause of death remains undisclosed. Speculation hints at the possibility of a heart attack given reports of his passing at home, awaiting official confirmation.

During his tenure, Watkins spearheaded efforts in the exoneration of wrongfully convicted individuals, notably through the establishment of a Conviction Integrity Unit. This unit garnered national recognition for advocating for the release of individuals who had been unjustly imprisoned for crimes they did not commit.

John Creuzot, the Dallas County Criminal District Attorney, expressed his condolences, acknowledging Watkins’s impact: “Craig was bright and ambitious, leaving behind a powerful legacy as the first elected African-American district attorney in Texas.”

Craig Marcus Watkins, born on November 16, 1967, in Dallas, was a distinguished alumnus of David W. Carter High School, graduating in 1986. He pursued a political science degree at Prairie View A&M University and later earned his J.D. from Texas Wesleyan University School of Law.

Watkins commenced his legal career as an intern before entering private practice. Despite an unsuccessful bid for district attorney in 2002, his triumph in 2006 marked a turning point. His focus on prosecuting child sexual abuse cases and achieving a staggering 99.4% conviction rate solidified his legacy.

Apart from his public service, Watkins delved into private practice, specializing in state and federal criminal defense and personal injury following his exit from government service.
