The young boy was transported to Children’s of Alabama with injuries that are not considered life-threatening. The suspect, believed to be the mother’s boyfriend or ex-boyfriend, was apprehended outside the apartment complex shortly after the shooting.

The suspect is currently jailed on a 48-hour felony hold for capital murder. BPD officers arrived at the scene swiftly and determined that the shooting was an act of domestic violence. Earlier that same day, police had responded to a verbal altercation at the same apartment and had been called to the location on previous occasions.

Lieutenant Michael Smith of the Birmingham Police Department provided details about the incident: “Upon arrival, officers found Cornelia Rose Lathan deceased from gunshot wounds and her younger brother injured. The suspect, who is believed to be the mother’s boyfriend or ex-boyfriend, was immediately apprehended outside the apartment.

This tragic event is a stark reminder of the devastating impact of domestic violence.” The pregnant mother of the victims was taken to the hospital for evaluation as a precaution. BPD continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the events leading up to it.
