Arthur Irving Death – Arthur Irving, the ambitious entrepreneur from New Brunswick who successfully managed Canada’s largest oil refinery, has passed away at the age of 93.
Arthur Irving was in charge of Irving Oil, which included the Saint John refinery, for many years. He gained fame due to his fixation on customer service, particularly his impromptu inspections to assess the sanitation of Irving gas station restrooms.
Irving was the second son of K.C. Irving, the industrialist who transformed a simple gas station, sawmill, and general store into a family-run industrial empire, elevating him and his three sons to become some of Canada’s most affluent entrepreneurs.
The Arthur Irving Family Trust became sole owner of Irving Oil in 2018 when it bought out a one-third stake in the company owned by the children of Arthur’s late younger brother Jack.
Forbes Magazine estimated Arthur Irving’s wealth at $6.4 billion as of May 6 and ranked him as the eighth richest person in Canada in 2023.He is survived by his second wife, Sandra, his children Jennifer, Kenneth, Arthur, Emily and Sarah, and his older brother J.K. Irving, 96. His younger brother Jack died in 2010.
In a rare 1998 interview with CBC New Brunswick, Arthur Irving articulated the energy and drive that was his trademark. he said. “We want our employees to be proud of us, we want to be proud of them and we want to keep going down the road and making this part of the country a better place to live,” Jabbing the air for emphasis, he added: “That’s our drive, every day. Every day. Every day!”
John K.F. Irving, a nephew of Arthur, is among those sending condolences following his passing. He said his uncle was not only enthusiastic about business, but was passionate about his community.
“Arthur’s commitment is evident both through his investment in its economic development and support of causes in areas such as the environment,” John Irving wrote in a statement.
“He served as chancellor of Acadia University and was a life-long dedicated member of Ducks Unlimited, committing many hours working toward their goals and objectives.” John Irving is the president of Ocean Capital. The company owns Acadia Broadcasting Corporation, which operates this station.
J.K. Irving, Arthur’s only surviving brother and president of J.D. Irving, Ltd. also extended his sympathies. “His tremendous contributions to the company, our home town of Saint John, New Brunswick, and all of Atlantic Canada will have a lasting impact,” he said.
